STAND UP TUESDAYS: Pete Holmes

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Pete Holmes’ comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

Comedian Pete Holmes has a brand new Comedy Central special premiering on Sunday, May 12 (11:00 pm EST), and you can bet he’s making it weird. “Nice Try, The Devil,” which will be released on May 14 by Comedy Central Records, offers fans a whole new hour of high-energy, feel-good humor from the “You Made It Weird” podcast host and is sure to tickle even the most stubborn funny bone.

Holmes has an energy that is virtually unmatched in today’s stand-up world – one that is highly driven by what he admits is his youth-pastor personality: “The kind of guy that likes to get to the airport a couple of hours early, get a few white wines in me, and start telling old people they ‘still got it’.”

Taped in front of a live audience at The Moody Theater in Austin, TX, the special marks the second full-length CD/DVD from Holmes – and fans of the comedian’s classic “Pierce!” joke will be overjoyed to find that he’s offered a follow up (and, quite simply, as Holmes puts it, “If that doesn’t unlock the safe where you keep your joy, maybe lube up the dial a little bit. Just a little bit.”

Pete Holmes can best be described by the title of his first release, “Impregnated With Wonder”, as throughout his set, his fascination with the simplest of things (for example, the concept of breast milk) is simply infectious. Unless you’re a bridge troll, it’s simply impossible not to have a great time watching or listening to “Nice Try, The Devil”.

Luckily for you, the May 14 release will include both the CD and DVD (because, well, who doesn’t want to scream out “Pierce!!!” in a moving automobile). Both feature material not seen in the broadcast, and the DVD will include Holmes’ episode of Comedy Central Presents and his appearances on John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show. “Nice Try, The Devil” will also be available in HD and SD on iTunes, Xbox Video, Amazon Instant Video and Sony Entertainment Network. Leading up to the on-air premiere, the Comedy Central’s Stand-Up website will feature preview clips from the special. Holmes will also engage with fans via a CC Tumblr “Ask a Professional Comedian” live event, and will also live tweet the premiere of the special.

Holmes also has written for and voices multiple characters on Comedy Central’s Ugly Americans, and is the voice and writer of the popular “E*Trade Baby” commercials. His short videos are ubiquitous on the internet and are featured regularly on CollegeHumor.com, Tosh.0, and Atom.com. Several of his cartoons have been published in The New Yorker, and his podcast, “You Made It Weird”, is available at www.nerdist.com. This fall, Holmes will begin hosting his own late night talk show on TBS.

Set your DVRs for one of the brightest and most entertaining comedy specials so far this year as “Pete Holmes: Nice Try, The Devil” premieres on Comedy Central on Sunday, May 12 at 11:00 pm EST – and be sure to pre-order your copy of the CD/DVD combo today!
