MOVIE TRAILER: Metallica Through the Never

Today we get a first look at the new IMAX 3D live concert film, Metallica Through the Never, with a brand new trailer. Now this isn’t just a live show documentary showcasing how old Metallica is; the film also blends live footage from one of their huge concerts and throws a narrative story into the mix.

The fiction portion, starring Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, The Place Beyond the Pines), tells the story of a Metallica roadie, Trip, who is tasked by the band during their set to go and retrieve something for the show. The trailer shows his van flipping, and he’s greeted by a group of people who don’t look very friendly. I wonder if he got whiplash?

This blend of both live concert footage and narrative filmmaking could be very interesting, but it’s hard to say how well this will come together in the end. I’m not convinced yet (because I frankly don’t trust Metallica with anything), but this is a concept I feel is worth checking out. If they don’t play anything off of Kill ‘Em All, Metallica Through the Never will be the biggest disappointment of the year as far as live concert films go.

Metallica Through the Never opens on September 27 on IMAX screens, and then it will have a wider release on October 4. Click through the break to watch the trailer, and let us know what you think of this type of concert documentary in the comments.
