FOR THE LOVE OF FILM: The Chronicles Of Riddick

For The Love Of Film is a weekly column from film nerd and lover of all movies Justin Proper. Sometimes you need some help to figure out how to enjoy movies, and we are here to help! No longer will you need to fear movie night because your friends have no taste in film. With this column you will be able to love even the worst gems to ever grace the silver screen.

Last week I went into detail about why you should love Pitch Black. Hopefully, you went out and watched the film and then agreed with absolutely everything I said. So Pitch Black ends and Riddick flies off into the distance and we are left to wonder what ever happened to that murdering hulk of a man. Luckily four years later The Chronicles Of Riddick (CoR) was released and you had to wonder no more.

My guess was banging hot space ladies.

CoR picks up five years after the events of Pitch Black. A group of ghost space nazis (called Necromongers) have set out to convert every being in the universe to their religion. It seems that only one thing can stop them and that thing is a Furyan. Those who paid close attention to the last film know that Riddick is the last remaining Furyan, as the rest of his species was decimated. What was Riddick doing during all of this? Hiding out from bounty hunters and growing a pretty bitchin’ beard.

Fuck yeah, Bearddick!

So Bearddick sets out to find the only person who knew of his whereabouts (the holy man from the first film) and learns of the Necromongers. He also finds out that Jack (the guy/girl from the last movie) is in a tripple max security prison because she went looking for…wait…I just realized Bearddick just looks like Beard dick, which is a totally different thing. Uhhh…

Fuck yeah, Beard Riddick!

Much better. Anyways, Riddick (now shaved and looking like he used to) sets out to investigate the Necromongers. Then he causes some shit (because of course he does) and the bad guys figure out who he is. Instead of just taking all of them down right then and there Riddick gets himself re-captured by the bounty hunters who decide to take him to the prison that Jack is in. This plan was pretty ridiculous, but it works out for Riddick. He frees Jack (who now goes by Kyra and is a hot girl) and they escape the prison and live happily ever after. Ha, yeah right, the Necromongers totally capture Kyra and leave Riddick for dead. I guess I have already spoiled most of the film so I will live the epic conclusion out, but I assure you it is very epic and concluding.

So much conclusion…so epic…

If the plot did not sell you there is no need to fret, I have plenty of other compelling reasons for you to watch this movie. The main draw is the action. If you thought Riddick killing monsters in Pitch Black was cool just wait until you see him murdering an army’s worth of people. The hand to hand combat and gunfights are some of the best I have seen in a sci-fi movie in a long time. Riddick goes from being an expert monster hunter to an expert killer of everything. He even manages to kill someone with a teacup.

Murder is his cup of tea, so to speak.

Another great reason to see this movie is Dame Judi Dench. Yeah, somehow they got her to take a minor role in CoR. Apparently it was all Vin Diesel’s idea, and as a result he made sure her dressing room was filled with flowers every day and said that he would not start acting for the film until she agreed to take the part. I guess he has a thing for M.

Distinguished can be sexy. Rawr.

Speaking of Dame Judi Dench, when asked about the film she said that she had no idea what was going on in the movie but she loved the sets, which is another great reason to dig this film. The sets and costumes (especially the costumes) are incredibly detailed and intricate. They are easily on par with the Alien films in terms of creating a new landscape full of towering statues and monoliths that give the worlds a very unique and dark feel. The Necromonger armor and outfits are insanely complex and they took the costumers months to complete.

No matter how cool these costumes are I still can’t take my eyes off of Karl Urban’s absurd haircut.

With the new movie Riddick coming out later this year it would be silly not to see the movie that proceeds it. Not only that, but CoR is pretty rad in its own right. Between the action, Vin Diesel’s badassery, and the killer sets this film should be on your watch list.
