Robert Downey Jr. Signs On To Appear As Iron Man In Two ‘Avengers’ Sequels

Even though RDJ’s contract with Marvel Studios ended with this year’s impressive Iron Man 3, our favorite sarcastic and wealthy bad boy turned superhero, Tony Stark will again be played by Downey Jr. in both The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3 as he just inked a two-film deal.

While we now know that Iron Man 4 may not be in the pipeline (for Downey at least) this brings up many questions and theories as to where this Marvel Universe is heading. While Downey will be playing Stark in the following two Avengers films, there’s no word whether or not Marvel will move on with a fourth Iron Man film with someone else donning his expensive suit. We could speculate all day and night about what’s to come for Stark and The Avengers but we’ll just have to wait until the second film is released in 2015.

Downey has previously stated that he would only like to play the character for a few more years as he had other plans in mind for the future but it appears that those plans may be put on the backburner just a little bit longer. You can read the official press release regarding his recent signing after the jump.

“I am Iron Man.”

Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the “billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.”

Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson.

Downey, Jr.’s last two Marvel films, 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers” and this year’s “Iron Man 3,” rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

“Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. Featuring favorites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen, “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is slated to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.

“and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen,” eh?
