REMAKE ALERT: ‘The Butterfly Effect’ Will Soon Strike Again

Back in 2004, the majority of the UTG staff was still in high school, iPods were still a cool thing, and Ashton Kutcher was generally known as Kelso from That 70s Show. Things changed that fall when a little movie called The Butterfly Effect, which found Kutcher taking his first dramatic turn, opened in theaters. Critics were not crazy about the film, but it eventually earned over $90 million on a $13 million budget, not to mention spawning two direct-to-dvd sequels. Now, according to Variety, the same team that delivered the original are going to try and do it again (but better, we hope).

Dave McNary has written a new article exclusively revealing that FilmEngine and Benderspink are teaming up to reboot The Butterfly Effect with original writer-director Eric Bress on board to pen the new script. Producers are A.J. Dix, Anthony Rhulen, Chris Bender and JC Spink, as they did on the original, along with Film Engine president Navid McIllhargey. No casting, director, plot, shooting, or release information has been confirmed at this time, but we expect details to begin trickling in soon.

If the reboot sticks to the premise of the original, viewers can expect a story about a man (or woman) discovering the ability to travel back in time and change the present by changing what they had done in his past, but at a cost that may outweigh the benefits. You can view the trailer for the original below.
