With a new album only two weeks away, Margot & The Nuclear So And So’s have debuted a new song and video. The song is “Lazy,” the video a largely colorless portrait of ennui. It’s like those anti-drug PSAs with the dog, except the paralyzing addiction is alcohol.
“Lazy” initially seems like a bummer, but that chorus — “But I love you so who cares? / You love me so who cares? / Life is easy so who cares? / If we’re lazy” — is pretty wrenching, in a beautiful way. Besides emotional heft and all those feelings, I can also really identify with that mattress-on-the-floor-life, even if the space mice are totally foreign to me.
Lazy follows “Hello, San Francisco” off the band’s upcoming sixth album, Sling Shot to Heaven. The two songs share a down-tempo beauty verging on melancholy; a happy sadness, a smiling nostalgia. It seems very much like an album for those who enjoy smiling through tears, two songs in.
Sling Shot to Heaven is out April 22 on Mariel. Pre-order it here.
