Summer 2014 Release Set For Woody Allen’s ‘Magic In The Moonlight’

Sony Pictures Classics has revealed a July 25, 2014 release date for Woody Allen’s Magic In The Moonlight. It will be his fourth summertime release in as many years, following 2013’s award-winning Blue Jasmine.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly for a new feature, Allen shared some insight on Magic‘s origins by informing the writer “I had it on a piece of notepaper in my drawer for ages…I knew it was a good plot, but I kept seeing it as a contemporary thing and something about that just didn’t smell right to me. Then when it occurred to me it could be set in the south of France in the 1920s, all of a sudden it just felt good.”

The plot of Magic In The Moonlight is being kept under wraps for the time being, but the story is said to focus on a man (Firth) who attempts to expose a phoney mystic (Stone), only to end up falling for her. It’s a new angle for Allen to take as far as storytelling is concerned, but unlikely lovers, not to mention those starring actors with large age gaps (there is a 28-year age difference between Firth in Stone in real-life) is certainly nothing new for the filmmaker.

We expect a trailer for Magic In The Moonlight will surface in the next month, but we can not confirm that information at this time. There is talk the film may also open Cannes, but again – it’s only a rumor for the time being. You can view a still from the EW article below.
