The Dan Auerbach Mix Of Lana Del Rey’s “West Coast” May Be Better Than The Original

If you’re anything like me then you have only recently managed to catch the breath that was stolen from you during the lush and entrancing debut of Lana Del Rey‘s new single (“West Coast“) last week. It had all the hazy vibes of pseudo-reality you have come to expect from the soulful vocalist, with a splash of guitar fuzz and pure California sunshine strong enough to hook even the coldest soul. Nothing too outside LDR’s wheelhouse, but a definite step towards something different than what was found on her debut.

This morning, Ultraviolence producer Dan Auerbach (who also happens to be a member of The Black Keys) released an alternate mix of the song that gives the track a subtle burst of new life. The original composition is retained, but the vocals are higher in the mix, which alters the overall vibe just enough to make a noticeable difference. Lana almost always sounds a bit love sick in her delivery, but here her hopeless devotion to the man at the center of the material is more biting than before. Click below and experience it for yourself:

“West Coast” is intended to be the first official single off Ultraviolence, but we still have no solid timeline on when fans can expect the album to be released. The original rumors pointed to early May, but seeing how that is now a week away and there are not even pre-orders available it seems highly unlikely that LDR’s sophomore full-length will be arriving anytime soon. She could pull a Beyonce, of course, but following in the footsteps of another musician who declares themselves a queen is not really Lana’s style.
