‘Whitey’ Trailer: America’s Most Notorious Crime Boss Finally Gets His Own Documentary

The world has changed a lot in the last thirty years, and it’s possible no individual is more well aware of that fact than James ‘Whitey’ Bulger. Throughout the 70s and early 80s he was the king of Boston crime, and until his capture in the late 2000s it seemed as if he would get away with it all.

Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger is the first of what film fans can expect to be many documentaries/features based around the life of the man most know as Whitey. Through interviews and court documents, the film recounts Bulger’s reign of terror over Boston and the corrupt officials that allowed him to control the city streets for more than a decade, as well as the trial that ultimately put him behind bars for the remainder of his life on Earth. It has played several festivals already and will arrive in theaters nationwide next month. You can view the first trailer below.

Those of us who are fortunate enough to live in New England have spent the better part of the last three years hearing Bulger discussed almost daily by our various news outlets. Add to this the interest from Hollywood in bringing a fictionalized account of events to life (or more than one, if reports are true) and you have a hotbed for documentarians that is incredibly hard to resist. Whitey is just the tip of the Bulger on screen iceberg, but that does not mean it’s worth skipping. On the contrary, early reviews from the festival circuit praised the film heavily. Expect a full review from UTG to surface in early June.
