STAND-UP TUESDAYS: Dan St. Germain

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Dan St. Germain’s comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

Comedian Dan St. Germain may be “Bad at the Good Times,” but when it comes to putting out his first comedy CD, he’s oh-so-good. The debut effort from St. Germain, which was released today via aspecialthing Records, proves that more times than not, good things are worth waiting for.

Recorded in Los Angeles at The NerdMelt Showroom in 2013, Bad at the Good Times offers up an absolutely hilarious hour of self-effacing, personal comedy that is sure to leave listeners doubled over in laughter.

From the moment the album starts, one knows they’re not just in for any old comedy album. St. Germain enlists the help of comedian Joe DeRosa to provide an hilarious parody of the headliner’s interaction with Chip Dixie, the nightmarish owner of the fictional comedy club Chucklenuts (who also makes an appearance at the end of the album).

St. Germain tackles a plethora of personal topics during his set, touching upon everything from getting his heart broken to battling depression and substance abuse, painting an image of a guy who’s remarkably able to muddle through the tough times and still come out on the comedic top. While he commiserates on past relationships and life moments he’s not so proud of, Dan St. Germain retains an infectiously high energy that affords him the ability to compare eating a pizza bun (a Cinnabon with a pizza on top of it) to the ass-to-ass scene in Requiem for a Dream. While Bad at the Good Times is chock full of absurdly fun moments, the album also serves as a reminder that all of us are continually fighting our own battles – and that it’s important to be able to laugh at those battles.

Despite just having released his debut CD, Dan’s resume is beyond impressive, as he was chosen as a featured comic in Variety’s annual prestigious “10 Comics To Watch” list, was listed as one of Paste Magazine’s Top 10 Great Underrated Comedians, and was chosen by Time Out New York as their “Comedy Break Out” of 2013. He was featured last year on Comedy Central’s “The Half Hour,” and has appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan, Best Week Ever, We Love the 2000s, John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show, The Electric Company, and a bunch of other basic and not-so-basic cable programs. He’s the creator and star of the web series Kicking Dan Out featured on My Damn Channel, In Security on Comedy Central Studios, and has collaborated with Above Average. Dan’s been a guest on WTF with Marc Maron, You Made it Weird, Ron and Fez, and The Artie Lange Show. He’s also got his own podcast, My Dumb Friends, on the All Things Comedy Network.

If I’m being totally honest, Bad at the Good Times was without a doubt the most fun I’ve had listening to a comedy CD to date. I particularly enjoyed listening to it in my car, which I’m convinced has left fellow commuters insanely jealous of how much fun I seem to be having. Grab your copy today and get to know a comedian who is sure to blow up in the coming years.
