Aquaman Has Been Cast For ‘Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice’

Ever since word first broke that DC was planning to use Batman V Superman as a way to kick off a series of films that would include the big screen debut of the Justice League fans have been curious as to whether or not Aquaman would be included in the cast. Today, we learned not only that the king of the sea will indeed appear in the upcoming Zack Snyder directed film, but we also learned what big name star will be filling the role.

According to HitFix, Jason Mamoa has been cast as Aquaman in both Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice and the currently untitled Justice League film. Mamoa is best known for his role on the insanely popular Game Of Thrones, but he also made a pretty big splash several years back as the lead in the attempted reboot of Conan The Barbarian. The site claims Snyder has “already finalized his designs for the character so shooting can take place soon.”

Mamoa has been rumored to be in consideration for Aquaman since the very beginning of the year. When asked about the possibility of him filling the role last month at a comic convention appearance, Mamoa responded:

“I know, Aquaman! I couldn’t even be more random for Aquaman, you know, with the blonde hair… I don’t even know where that comes from – it’s like me being… uh… Robin or something. Who pulls that out? I see that on the internet and I’m like, Aquaman? A guy like… Lobo I could see.“

Well played, Mamoa. Well played.

For those unfamiliar with the character in question, Aquaman was created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger in November 1941. He has the power to live underwater, as well as the ability to communicate telepathically with all the creatures in the sea. He is also a founding member of the Justice League.

There is no word yet on whether or not DC will attempt to give Aquaman his own film, but I certainly do not think such an idea is out of the question. HBO’s popular series Entourage once built an entire season around the idea that James Cameron would want to make the Aquaman film, and in their universe the film was a box office sensation. I don’t know that the same would happen here in the real world, but with the right director anything is possible.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is still two years away from release, so expect plenty more headlines related to production in the weeks and months ahead. The film opens May 6, 2016.
