‘Pacific Rim 2’ Confirmed, Set to Release in 2017!

Not that it comes as much of a surprise, but our kaiju-loving hearts are elated this morning as Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that Pacific Rim 2 is a go! The first outing in del Toro’s massive-scale, giant robots versus giant monsters blockbuster was one of our favorite films of 2013, and upon leaving the theater (on first viewing) I immediately had two questions: “When do I have time to come watch this again?” and “How long will we have to wait for a sequel?!”

We’ve known for months that del Toro was dabbling with the sequel’s script but it’s only come to light as of yesterday that the much-anticipated followup is currently a sure thing. It likely won’t be a Pacific Rim x Godzilla mash-up as many had hoped (dammit!) but it is set to be released on April 7, 2017 with the script being drafted by Zak Penn and del Toro himself. As with the now-franchise’s initial film, Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene.

Furthermore, del Toro has also revealed that a Pacific Rim animated series is in development as well! No further information has been revealed at this time but we’ll be sure to update you as details surface in the coming months. After the jump you can view a brief announcement video from Guillermo del Toro.
