‘Mommy’ Trailer: A Quick Look At Xavier Dolan’s Cannes Smash

Every year there are a handful of films that come out of Cannes with all the praise and critical adoration any indie title could hope to achieve. Some of those titles go on to find major success at the box office, while others become indie fan favorites that never quite break through to the mainstream. I am not sure where Xavier Dolan’s latest will fall, but it will certainly have a lot of people talking.

In a fictional Canada, a new law allows distressed parents to abandon their troubled children to the hospital system. Diane “Die” Despres, a feisty widow, tries to cope with Steve, her wild yet charismatic son with ADHD. While they both try to make ends meet, Kyla, a mysterious neighbor, offers her help. As Kyla’s heartwarming presence becomes increasingly intense, questions emerge about her own mysterious life, and the way her destiny may ultimately be linked to that of Steve and Die.

Mommy is a film created and presented in a 1:1 aspect ratio, which some have dubbed ‘Instagram style.’ The trailer you will see below, as well as the final product that screens in cinemas, is meant to be presented in a square frame. Do not attempt to adjust your monitor. This is just art being artsy.

Mommy does not have a US release date at this point, but those close to the border may want to make a trip to Canada for the film’s September 19 release in Quebec. We’ll bring you more on the film’s release and future promotional plans as soon as more information becomes available.
