Stream Shabazz Palaces’ Lush New Album ‘Lese Majesty’

Shabazz Palaces, still mysterious even after discovering Seattle’s Ishmael Butler was behind the project, returns. The fascinating Sub Pop art rap releases Lese Majesty in one week, but you can hear it for a week via NPR’s First Listen series.

The album has plenty of the avante garde weirdness of past Shabazz tunes, but it’s also a surprisingly lush, relaxed release. As Andrew Matson points out, “the album’s title comes from the French phrase for sacrilege against royalty.” Perhaps its posh nature shouldn’t be a surprise, then, as the names gracing the album and its tracks relate to royalty.. Butler even has some pet pythons leashed in the accompanying photo, though it’s in front of a swapmeet. To delve further into the weirdness, pre-order the album from Sub Pop.
