Every few years, Hollywood revamps classic musicals with casts full of A-list stars, with varying degrees of success and overall vocal talent. The Stephen Sondheim classic Into the Woods is the most recent Broadway favorite to get the same treatment. Unofficial Queen of Twitter Anna Kendrick gave us glimpses of make-up trailers and behind-the-scenes tomfoolery while they were filming last year and now Disney has released a teaser trailer for the film, slated for a Christmas release.
Movie musical veterans Meryl Streep (hopefully atoning for Mama Mia), Johnny Depp, and Anna Kendrick are joined by Emily Blunt, Chris Pine, and James Corden in Rob Marshall’s adaptation. For the unfamiliar, Into the Woods is a mash-up of Brothers Grimm fairy tales, with the story centered around the Baker and his wife and their struggle to free themselves from an evil witch’s curse. We’ll have to wait for a longer trailer to hear any of Sondheim’s tunes, but the teaser shows a much darker (ahem, Grimm) tone than the usually cheery stage productions.
