‘Testament of Youth’ Trailer: Alicia Vikander Will Not Let WWI Get The Best Of Her

The history of cinema is littered with dozens, if not hundreds of films based on the struggles of people who lived through World War II. It’s far more rare that films on the first world war make their way to mainstream audiences, but next year that is exactly what will happen when Testament Of Youth hits theaters nationwide.

Alicia Vikander has become a hot commodity in Hollywood over the last couple years, and her latest leading role will take audiences to a world torn asunder by World War I. Based on the classic First World War memoir, Testament of Youth shares the incredible true story of one young woman’s struggle to survive the horrors of war, which robbed her of everyone and everything she held dear, but was ultimately unable to break her extraordinary spirit. The first trailer plays heavily into the idea of feeling like you have everything only to lose it all soon after, and I’ll be the first to admit it tugged on my heartstrings something fierce. The full synopsis for Testament Of Youth reads:

But the First World War is looming and as the boys leave for the front Vera realises she cannot sit idly by as her peers fight for their country, so volunteers as a nurse. She works tirelessly, experiencing all the grief of war, as one by one her fiancé, her brother and their closest friends are all killed and the pillars of her world shattered. But, an indefatigable spirit, Vera endures and returns to Oxford, irrevocably changed, yet determined to create a world in which such a war can never take place again.
