‘Dead Rising’ Movie Finds A Director

Capcom has announced plans to adapt the bestselling Dead Rising video game franchise into a major motion picture and earlier this week we learned who would be responsible for bringing the series to life.

Leprechaun: Origins helmer Zach Lipovsky will be directing a Dead Rising movie based on the beloved game franchise. The film is being produced by Legendary Pictures’ new Legendary Digital Media division and Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Mortal Kombat: Legacy producer Tim Carter wrote the script.

According to a press release, the 90-minute digital feature film will premiere exclusively on Crackle in the US and will be distributed internationally in both episodic and feature format by Content Media Corp. Dead Rising will also be released on SVOD, DVD, VOD and TV after its run on Crackle. This means no theatrical run and, likely, loads and loads of digital/CGI blood.

No plot synopsis has been released for the film, but we did manage to find this summary on the series from Capcom:

Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, a freelance photojournalist after the scoop of a lifetime. In a small suburban town that’s overrun by zombies, he escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be safe. Now it’s a standoff, with zombies unable to get Frank, but him unable to get out & escape. Fortunately, he’s got an entire mall at his disposal. Utilize everything you can find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic.

If I had my way, Dead Rising would follow the plot of the original game and take place entirely inside a shopping mall. I know there would be those who drew comparisons to Dawn Of The Dead, but is that necessarily a bad thing as long as Dead Rising is good as well?

No release date has been set for Dead Rising, but I am sure plenty of casting and production announcements will surface in the weeks ahead. Stay tuned.
