STAND-UP TUESDAYS: Felicia Michaels

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Felicia Michaels’  comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

This week in Stand-Up Tuesdays, we take a look at the brilliantly blue comedy of Felicia Michaels, who recently released her album, Milf & Cookies, via Uproar Entertainment. A true renaissance woman, Michaels not only boasts a wildly successful comedy career, but is also an actress, director and noted photographer. Add posing for Playboy to the mix, and you’ve got a woman who can do it all.

In her second album since she returned to stand-up after having her second child, Michaels holds no bars when it comes to riffing on her teenage son, online dating after divorce, and being awesome at video games. Her liberal use of blue humor isn’t about shock factor (though it serves quite successfully in that area), but more about honesty. Michaels doesn’t shy away from admitting her love of, well, blowjobs, nor does she apologize for having been declared a Milf by her son’s friend.

At several points throughout the album, Michaels adapts a high-pitched, cutesy tone of voice that feels almost unnecessary and overly reminiscent of Maria Bamford – though, I have to admit I’ve always had more familiarity with Bamford than I had with Michaels. But for a confident, single mother like Michaels, the voice does little to add to the strength of her set. And while I’m all for getting dirty in comedy, I’m not sure I had the mental prowess to hear the word ‘quief’ as much as I had to. But then again, that’s just me.

Felicia Michaels has been seen on such networks as MTV, A&E, Comedy Central, VH1 and Showtime, NBC, ABC and FOX, and was once crowned a Comedy Grand Champion on Star Search. Her first comedy album, Lewd Awakenings, landed her on XM Satellite’s list of top 100 jokes and she has been named Funniest Female by the American Comedy Awards. Check out her new album, Milf & Cookies today, but be warned – it’s not for the faint of heart.
