Grace Mitchell Takes A Wild Turn With “Jitter” (Listen)

Grace Mitchell’s Design EP came out less than a year ago; one of 2014’s best pop releases–albeit one that went mostly undiscovered in a mainstream capacity. The 18-year-old Oregon native’s voice is the immediate draw across all four tracks on the release but the maturity of the effort as a whole is impressive. Mitchell is already back with her follow-up, though, and this time she’s taken a bit of a stylistic turn, both musically and in her overall demeanor. Her new Raceday EP, produced by Foster The People’s Mark Foster, is out now, and the effort’s lead single has a familiarly-designed lyric video ready for your viewing pleasure.

Mitchell seems to be almost trolling anyone expecting “Jitter” to be closely reminiscent of her last EP, as the song’s opening 16 seconds seem to build to something akin to that. However, as soon as the 17-second mark hits, it’s clear we’re in for something entirely new. The track’s title is apt as the first jumpy beat comes into play and the lyrics begin to reveal that “Jitter” is about getting turnt and slizzard in the club with your #squad. The design work for the lyric video oddly contrasts the song’s theme with iconic fonts lifted from Sex Pistols, Nirvana, Misfits, Black Flag and more, but it works. It feels nostalgic, it’s eye-catching and the song is so damn addictive that you really don’t care any of the times you restart it from the beginning.

You can stream “Jitter” below. Try not to lose your damn mind at that funky 1:09 chorus break.
