SINGLE REVIEW: VOKES – “Cruel Game”

Artist: VOKES
Song: “Cruel Game”
Album: Fractalism

VOKES‘ debut single, “Cruel Game,” is a multi-faceted piece of work that masterfully rides the line between past and present. While offered in a sleek pop-package, the track ebbs and flows with an overwhelming sense of life; woodblock-esque percussion in the background evokes a quirky 1980s aesthetic and funky guitar-work plucks away while the hook’s dramatized vocals acknowledge “what a cruel game you play,” an accusation that stings further and further with each repetition.

Riding out the final note of the hook with utter smoothness, VOKES mastermind Mike Harris displays a keen sense of not only how to make a catchy track, but the intricacies that take it to the next level. Thus, with the project’s debut EP, Fractalism, on the way, we can only assume “Cruel Game” is simply scratching the surface of his dance-worthy jams.
