UTG PREMIERE: Hymn – ‘Mouth’ EP

hymn premiere

Pennsylvania indie/emo quintet Hymn are just a week out from the official release of their debut EP, titled Mouth, which will be available through Running Around Records as of June 17. Today, we’ve teamed with the band to share the four-track effort in full for your listening pleasure. Sharing influences with home state neighbors like Tigers Jaw, Petal, Superheaven, and the like, Hymn meld elements of punk, emo, and indie rock into a formula that fans of any of those bands will surely find satisfaction in.

Speaking to UTG, vocalist/guitarist Tyler “TJ” Chau explains the ideas running throughout the brief EP and what Hymn hope to accomplish with its release:

“‘Mouth’ is a short album about social anxiety, awkwardness, not saying the things we really think, not being able to save certain people from misfortune because of those things we didn’t say, and telling certain people that we’re grateful to be a part of their lives. It’s about communication, and how we choose to (or not to) use it. And somehow, we were able to channel it all into a set of songs under 10 minutes. The inspiration for the album’s theme actually comes from the album artwork, which is done by my good friend Morgan Monaghan.

We worked with Jacob Clarke (Superheaven) during the recording process, and it was really comfortable. We didn’t know what to expect going into it, and we were making changes pretty much up until the last moment. But we really liked what we ended up with. This is our first release with Brianna on keys and vocals, and adding that dynamic to the band was one of the best things we could have done.

At the end of it all, we’re still nervous and timid individuals, but we’re working ourselves as best as we can. And it feels good that we put these feelings into the universe. It’s kind of a way of letting go of a little bit of it, and we hope that people might be able to relate to some of these feelings and we can connect with the people that hear this.”

If you’d like to pre-order a copy of Mouth on CD or tape, as we’re sure you would, you can do so through Running Around Records.
