It seems to me that many musicians these day believe the only way to stand out from the crowd is to be as original/unique as humanly possible. Metal acts try to to be heavier, pop acts try to be catchier, and emo acts try to out-sad each other. However, every now and then a group comes along who realize the real key isn’t inventing the wheel 2.0, but simply refining the existing model. Enter Chicago’s The April Year. While they may appear as nothing more than a mere pop rock act with an image any mother could love, there’s great depth to their music and lyrical complexity that manages to be simultaneously catchy and thought provoking. The group’s debut EP, The First Time In Forever, is out now and can be streamed exclusively below.
