“Captain America” breaks Potter’s spell

That didn’t take long.

The weekend box office numbers are in and not only did Captain America: The First Avenger beat Harry Potter, it did so by nearly $20 million.

Stealing Thor‘s crown as king of the Summer 2011 box office, Captain America will finish this weekend with roughly $65.8 million in box office receipts. This makes it the number one film in America, beating Harry Potters And The Deathly Hallows Part Two which suffered a 72% drop in sales to end its second weekend with another $48.1 million.

Don’t worry, Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling are sleeping just fine with a second place finish. After only two weekends, the eighth Potter films has now grossed over $275 million domestically, helping the series to finally surpass Star Wars as the highest grossing franchise of all time.
