The more we cover hip hop, the more mornings I find myself sifting through emails proclaiming DJ “generic sounding name” has dropped/unleashed/set off the latest mixtape from “insert city”/the game/hip hop’s next big thing. I have always done my best to keep UTG’s original promise of previewing all material submitted and can honestly say, more often then not, these tapes do not live up to well-written hype that arrived in my Gmail. In fact, it is a downright rarity that anything makes it beyond a curious click or two, but recently such an album arrived.
Hosted by Mr. Peter Parker, Leedz Edutainment and DJBooth’s The Write-Off Vol. 3 delivers an engaging and catchy compilation of Boston’s finest hip hop artists. In a time when the mainstream seems fixated on self and economics, every artist featured on this mix presents complex metaphors and verses about the human experience, allowing listeners the chance to actually relate to the material. It may not seem like a big deal at face value, but that is only because it has been a long time since a compilation release found a groove this good. When you hear it, you will understand.
The Write-Off Vol. 3 is available for free RIGHT NOW on Bandcamp. Still not convinced to buy? Click below and listen to the entire mixtape right here on UTG!
