STAND UP TUESDAYS: Anthony Jeselnik

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Anthony Jeselnik. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

Comedian Anthony Jeselnik returns to Comedy Central this weekend with his hilariously caustic style intact in the world premiere of his original one-hour stand-up special, Anthony Jeselnik: Caligula, which airs on Sunday, January 13th at 10:00 p.m. No subject matter is off limits for Jeselnik, who starts his set with a rape joke (and promises more) and takes his audience on a ride through the dark underbelly of comedy.

“But then we leave the bar,” Jeselnik states, describing a recent date he went on. “We go back to her place, and as soon as we walk in the front door she passes out cold.  Now, I went to college, I knew I had a million options.  But I’m a gentleman, so I did the smart thing. I just got a blanket, I tucked her in, and I left her a note that said, ‘You got raped.’”

Jeselnik’s boyish looks and relaxed stage presence almost betray the sharp tongue and scathing wit that is unleashed when Jeselnik performs. He commands the room with his perfectly-timed delivery, leaving his audience constantly guessing where the expert comedian will go next.

“I’ve spent the past two years looking for my ex-girlfriend’s killer,” Jeselnik quips, “but no one will do it.”

What’s refreshing about Jeselnik is that, despite his scathing stage persona, the comedian is actually a down-to-earth nice guy. Taking the time to speak with me back in July during the 2012 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, Jeselnik informed me of another Comedy Central venture he has in the works.

“I got picked up picked up by Comedy Central, it’s going to premiere in January,” Jeselnik dishes. “Comedy Central said we want a show from you, we want you to do a half hour every night, like a midnight show after Colbert. So we’re like, okay great, let’s do that. We had it down; it was like, we’ll talk about what happened that day, have like, a comedy bit, and then a couple things of panel where I’d just be talking to people. They were like, ‘We love it, but we’re not going to do anything at midnight now, it’s budget things, so we’re going to pick you up for a weekly show, but now you have to tell us what that show is.’ So I have a premiere date, I have everything – except, we have to figure it out. So after the roast [of Roseanne Barr] I’m going to sit down with my team – the same team I used for the old show, I love those guys – and figure out exactly what it will be. I know what I want it to be, but we have to figure out how we’re going to tell Comedy Central.”

Jeselnik will bring his signature dark and twisted point-of-view to the network in his new, weekly topical series, “The Jeselnik Offensive,” premiering on Comedy Central on February 19th.  In the series, airing Tuesday nights at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT, Jeselnik and guest panelists will gleefully bash pop culture and rip the veil of sanctity from off-limit topics.

Anthony Jeselnik: Caligula will be released on January 15th by Comedy Central Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment as an extended and uncensored DVD.  The bonus features include Jeselnik’s uncut performances from the “Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump,” the “Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen,” and the “Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne.”  Caligula will be also available on January 15th in HD exclusively on Xbox LIVE and Sony PlayStation Network, and in SD on iTunes and Vudu.

Comedy Central Records will also release the “Anthony Jeselnik: Caligula” uncensored and extended CD on January 15. Leading up to the on-air premiere, the Comedy Central Stand-Up Web site will feature preview clips from the special as well as exclusive clips from the DVD. Jeselnik is most famous for the “Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump” and the “Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen.”  He has appeared on “Conan” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Don’t miss the January 13th premiere of Anthony Jeselnik: Caligula at 10:00 p.m. EST on Comedy Central and be sure to pick up your copy of the extended DVD when it’s out on January 15th.
