Last August, Universal took a big chance and released the fourth installment of their popular Bourne Identity franchise without original star Matt Damon (or director Paul Greengrass). The Bourne Legacy introduced Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, a black ops soldier who had to fight for his life after being marked for death by higher ups following the events of the first three films. He survived, as did the girl he found along the way, and now it seems Aaron Cross may have another adventure on the way.
According to a new story in Variety this morning, Universal Pictures have announced plans to move forward with a fifth installment of the Bourne franchise. The studio has reportedly hired screenwriter Anthony Peckham (Invictus, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes) to pen a script focusing on Renner’s character, but no details about a possible plot have been revealed. Frank Marshall and Captivate Entertainment’s Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner are on board to produce.
As much as I love Jeremy Renner, an unnecessary sequel to a film that should have never been a sequel to begin with feels extra pointless. I’m sure the chases will be great, and the story solid, but why stay in the Bourne universe when you could just as easily let Renner lead his own franchise (from the beginning, no less)?
