Prepare your corn rows and start practicing your impression of James Franco doing an impression of Riff Raff because Wild Bunch productions has officially revealed plans to create a sequel to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers.
Titled Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, the new film will pit our bikini-clad heroines against an extreme militant Christian sect that wants to convert them. The film is being scripted by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh and directed by Jonas Åkerlund. Korine is not involved in any way, at least as far as we know.
“It’s not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” says Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval in a new story from Screen Daily. He also says that the film will feature a mix of new and old cast, but does not comment on whether the four original leading ladies – Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine or Selena Gomez – or James Franco would be returning.
No additional production or release information is available at this time. The sequel is expected to be sold at Cannes, so fans of the original should expect more details regarding the latest chapter to surface closer to that event. Stay tuned.
