Washed Out has shared yet another seven minute video off last year’s Paracosm. Several months after October’s “All I Know,” “Weightless” is a fragmented piece of one boy’s tragic, unrequited love for another.
Director David Altobelli plays with dream, reality, and the light and motion blurring the two in the slowly unfolding short, which has a morose and woebegone – yet nevertheless beautiful – leisure to it. It’s a tale immediately familiar – who hasn’t had their affections cast aside before, or seen it done in a wrenching melodrama?
As quoted on Pitchfork, Altobelli says of the video, “Unrequited love is a universal emotion. In this case, the emotions are heightened because there exists yet another wall between the protagonist and the object of his affection. It’s heartbreaking and inevitable, but it’s also just part of being a kid in love.”
Avril gave us false hope. We don’t all get our sk8r boi in the end. And so this one rollerblades away, grinding down a rail that might as well be the maimed heat of our poor, unnamed protragonist.
