Since showing at Sundance, The Skeleton Twins has had the internet buzzing about the impeccable chemistry of its stars. Those stars are Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, who are once-estranged siblings now reunited in the wake of tragedy. The Craig Johnson-directed film follows the two as they work out their not insubstantial issues and the various skeletons (ahem) they’ve hidden away, dragging along hapless fiance Lance (Luke Wilson) and others (including Ty Burrell) in the process.
The film is, as many have noted, a dramatic turn for the two Saturday Night Live alums, both of whom are known for their bevy of truly unique, oddball characters. The experience of the former colleagues and ensemble members is used well here, as the two interact superbly in the core relationship that supports the whole film. We never doubted the two had the chops for meaty dramatic roles, but they haven’t had many chances to show them off quite like this.
There will still be comedy to be had, though, as seen in the trailer for the film. We get a snippet of the epic Starship lip synch that’s been teased, as well as “George Clooney is a famous actor.”
The Skeleton Twins opens September 19. Please do watch the delightful trailer for yourselves. You won’t want to miss this when it comes out.
