‘The Captive’ Trailer: Who Would Kidnap Ryan Reynolds’ Daughter?

Remember when Ryan Reynolds was the good-looking smartass in every film? Those days seem to be long gone at this point, and in their place we have low budget action and horror-related titles that draw big clicks online. The latest, The Captive, looks like a ’90s whodunnit? with a bit of a modern edge.

On a seemingly normal day, Ryan Reynolds leaves his young daughter in his car while making a quick errand and returns to find his vehicle empty. He searches the immediate area, but finds no sign of his daughter and calls on the help of an investigator (Rosario Dawson) to help solve the case. The clues lead them to a hotel room, but the discover of a hidden camera throws another strange twist in what looks to potentially be a very chilling–albeit somewhat hokey–story. You can view the film’s first trailer below:

I love to watch Ryan Reynolds do things on film (or digital video), but filmmaker Atom Egoyan has not exactly been on a hot streak with his last several films. Devil’s Knot, his most recent feature, limped into the 2013 festival circuit and arrived DOA to VOD by May of this year. I believe it’s on Netflix already, but unless you really want to see Reese Witherspoon deliver a phoned-in performance based around the West Memphis 3 there really is no need to see it. West Of Memphis is a far better, and far more accurate film.

The official synopsis for The Captive reads:

Eight years after the disappearance of Cassandra, some disturbing indications seem to indicate that she’s still alive. Police, parents and Cassandra herself, will try to unravel the mystery of her disappearance.

The Captive is planned for release this fall, but no specific date has been set at this point.
