Lykke Li Is Still Lonely In The “Gunshot” Video, Despite The Bikers And Twerkers

Lykke Li‘s stunning new album I Never Learn, is a heartbreaking one. I’ve gone on about this before, but it’s just that distressing. Someone give her a hug and a puppy.

A sense of foreboding continues in the video for “Gunshot,” an artsy take on either the apocalypse or a Wal-Mart parking lot. Lykke Li, trench-coated and troubled, dances and herky-jerks her way across the fissure-split expanse. She bounces like the saddest pinball from bums to grimy kids, zipping by a scrawny weightlifter (who has sacrificed his form for the sake of lifting a more impressive weight) and getting caught in a troupe of twerkers. Wherever and whenever this is, it seems twerking is still trendy.

It would be a sad and lonely setting even lacking our leading lady. With her, it’s even more forlorn. She’s spasming about, misunderstood even in this bedraggled crowd of misfits. She can’t associate or fit in. She’s found people, and yet she’s still alone. Whether this is the intended message or not, whether that giant fissure is a part of it or not – because I honestly don’t know for sure – it’s certainly a feeling permeating the clip. With Lykke Li’s already lonesome songs sound-tracking the scene, it edges on despairing. Enjoy it, I guess, below.
