Per Variety, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone are developing an as-yet-untitled movie. The film is being produced by Judd Apatow and developed by Universal Pictures.
This news means two things: brand new songs and boatloads of cameos. Shaffer and Taccone will co-direct, and Samberg will undoubtedly star, with the production being overseen by Universal’s Erik Baiers. This is yet another recent extra-music development for the musical acting trio; they also signed a deal with Fox – which airs the Samberg-starring, Golden Globe-winning comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine – “to develop TV shows on digital platforms for the network.”
The Lonely Island have released three albums: Incredibad, Turtleneck & Chain, and The Wack Album, but the stars have long been involved in television and film with Saturday Night Live, 2007’s Hot Rod, 2010’s Magruber, 2012’s The Watch, and a number of Samberg-starring projects.
The possibilities with this new film are intriguing. Will it be a silly music industry parody, or a silly homage film? Will we see a Lonely Island-esque band trying to make it, or will our stars be a supposedly serious band that’s hilariously over-the-top? I would guess the latter, and I wouldn’t be opposed to Andy Samberg as Chad Kroeger. Kristen Wiig could play Avril Lavigne. Oh, please let this happen.
