Required Listening: Kendrick Lamar – “I”

There is an entire generation walking the planet today who may have very well lived their entire lives without knowing of or listening to the work of The Isley Brothers. Thanks to Kendrick Lamar however, that is about to change.

This morning, Kendrick Lamar broke his long-standing radio silence with the release of a new song titled “I.” The track, which samples the Isley Brothers’ “That Lady,” is the first track to surface from the Compton raised artist since the release of his debut album nearly two years back. You can stream the song, in full, at the end of this post.

It can be incredibly hard to know what Kendrick Lamar is planning to do next, and I think it’s safe to say no one really knew what to expect from “I” when it was initially announced. Kendrick has done a great job of delivering a wide array of music during his time in the spotlight, and by doing so he has kept himself and his career from sliding into an urban music niche that lacks broad appeal. “I” is entirely radio ready from the jump, but it also features the in-depth look at life and struggles it can bring which has become a signature in Kendrick’s music.

The key lyrics, at least in my opinion, are:

“I’ve been dealing with depression ever since an adolescent / I can never yell the blessin’, l can never see the message / I can never take the lead, I can never bob and weave … Give my story to the children and the lesson they can read.”

It’s unclear when Kendrick Lamar plans on releasing more new material, but for the time being “I” should do a great job of keeping you company on those chilly fall mornings. Comment below and let us know your thoughts on the track.
