Filmmaker David Ayer took to Twitter Sunday night to share the first official look at the cast of next year’s Suicide Squad.
“Task Force X assembled and ready” tweeted David Ayer on Sunday, May 3. The filmmaker, who recently had critical and box office success with the World War II film Fury, returned to the social media platform just a little over a week after sharing a first look at Jared Leto’s turn as the joker to showcase the full cast of Suicide Squad in costume. The image, which you can see below, has since become the topic of every other nerd conversation and entertainment blog op-ed posted in the last twelve hours.
From left to right, the characters pictured are Slipknot (Adam Beach), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez).
Suicide Squad has been a favorite series of mine for a couple of years now, but I am not totally sold on the look of the characters just yet. David Ayer has a very specific, often testosterone fueled view of the world, and this image seems to say that is exactly what he plans to deliver once again with this film. If it works, it works, but selling folks on a world where Killer Croc actually exists seems like a far-fetched idea even to me.
Also, it’s worth noting that it appears Ayer chose an incredibly recent variation of Harley Quinn for this film. The character, whose classic attire includes a red and black jumpsuit, has only been depicted as the pseudo-trashy roller girl from hell in the last two or three years. As long as Margot Robbie has her signature voice down I won’t complain, but for now I’ll just try my best to reserve judgment.
Suicide Squad opens August 5, 2016.
