New ‘Victor Frankenstein’ Trailer is Actually Kind Of Badass

I’ve lost count of how many times Hollywood has tried to create a definitive retelling of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but there has to be more than ten titles that have come and gone by now. The most recent was I, Frankenstein, and I think we can all agree that is one film that is better left forgotten.

Hollywood, generally speaking, is a slow learner. When big budget adaptations do not work out the original source material is only shelved for a period of time long enough to ensure audiences are willing to give whatever studio owns the rights another chance to make a good film. We’ve seen this many times throughout history, both with iconic characters like the Wolf Man, as well as comic franchises like Fantastic Four or Spider-Man.

With this in mind, allow me to introduce you to Victor Frankenstein. Directed by Paul McGuigan (Wicker Park), and written by Max Landis (Chronicle), the new adaptation pulls from several sources on top of Shelley’s 1818 novel, including other movies, to create a new pastiche. The film stars James McAvoy as the doctor, along with Daniel Radcliffe as Igor. The first trailer debuted this morning and, aside from appearing aesthetically reminiscent of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock films, everything looks quite promising. You can view the trailer below.

The new film is told through the eyes of Igor, Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant and human guinea pig. It’s a toxic master and servant relationship to be sure. “Victor’s ego means that at times he thinks he’s superior to Igor,” McAvoy told EW this week. “Their relationship is close, loving, abusive, manipulative, and it turns on a dime.”

Victor Frankenstein opens nationwide on November 25.
