Artist: Sophie and the Bom Boms
Song: “Big Girls”
Album: TBA
Sophie Stern’s knack for songwriting has never been in question; as a former associate of Dr. Luke, the Los Angeles-based musician has more than her fair share of thoroughly infectious music under her belt. Yet, when comparing Stern’s newest single with last year’s The Shmixtape (and even her work for eternal pop-queen Britney Spears), it just might be her best effort to date.
Built on breezy, ’80s nostalgia, “Big Girls” echoes vivid images of the sunny California coast you’d imagine plastered on a glossy postcard. Featuring snappy percussion and a funky, synthesized bassline, Stern shows vocal restraint while reflecting on dreaming “big like Kobe and a sixth ring” alone in her bedroom before bursting into an anthemic chorus that proclaims “big girls ain’t gonna cry now.” It’s an undeniable audible triumph whose joy is powerful enough to spur dropping the top on the convertible and exhaling all worries.
Only the first track to surface from Stern’s forthcoming EP (featuring production from a Grammy award winner and a Charli XCX collaborator), “Big Girls” scratches the surface of what we can safely assume is a captivating project to come.
