Though it has been rumored for several days, MGM and Fox 2000 have officially partnered with plans to develop a quasi-remake of the iconic horror film Poltergeist.
Confirmed this morning via press release, the “modern” version of Poltergeist will be directed by Monster House mastermind Gil Kenan and written by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire, who recently received credit for Oz: The Great and Powerful. No casting has been revealed, but a description of the plot reads as follows:
“In a revisionist take on the classic horror film, a family struggling to make ends meet relocates to an outdated suburban home and is confronted by an angry spirit who kidnaps their youngest daughter and challenges them to band together to rescue her from the clutches of evil.”
Production on Poltergeist is set to begin this fall. No release date has been set at this time, but we’re guessing October 2014 would be a solid bet.
As you can probably imagine, news of a Poltergeist remake has been receiving all sorts of feedback across social networks. While genre fans are excited at the possibility of revisiting a familiar title, it’s hard for anyone to forget all the recent remakes that have fallen significantly short of their predecessors. You can view a collection of reactions to the news below. Comment and let us know if you’re excited to see Poltergeist return to the big screen.

Remaking Poltergeist just proves that the title is all that matters on a remake. It's a HAUNTED HOUSE story.

There are many ways to ensure failure in this world. Attempting to remake POLTERGEIST is perhaps the simplest one.
