MUSIC VIDEO: James Blake – “Retrograde”

James Blake

James Blake is back in a big way. We already told you about his upcoming album Overgrown and its leadoff single, the sumptuous and soulful “Retrograde”. The track was premiered earlier this week so you know that the powers that be would make it commercially available in short order. And they will on Monday, February 11. That’s tomorrow.

Not that he needed to build any more buzz for the song, but Blake just managed to squeak out the music video for “Retrograde” a day head of its commercial release.

It’s clear from the treatment of “Retrograde” that Blake’s ambitions and his promotion budget have swelled in tandem. But this is still the same fey creative guy we got to know back in 2010. I’ve watched the video for “Retrograde” a few times already and I still don’t know what the hell is going on. There’s something falling out of the sky. A mysterious motorcyclist. Some people who appear to be caught in the throes of a chronological disaster. And Blake, who looks like he’s watching the whole thing from inside a closet or huddled under a flight of stairs or something.

Try to decipher the meaning of “Retrograde” after the jump.

Overgrown will be released April 8 on Republic.
