HOLY SH!T: First Teaser For Paul W.S. Anderson’s ‘Pompeii’ Is Pretty Cool

Paul W.S. Anderson has become synonymous with the world of Resident Evil over the last decade, but next spring moviegoers will see the director recreate a point in human history rarely seen on the silver screen: The destruction of Pompeii.

For those of you who forgot everything you learned in world history class, the Roman city of Pompeii lied near Naples until the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried it under lava and ash in 79 AD. Paul W.S. Anderson’s new epic, is set in the time around the destruction, and in the teaser released this morning we’re offered only a brief glimpse of the historical destruction porn that lies ahead. The movie hits theaters in February 2014.

The official synopsis reads: Set in 79 A.D., Pompeii tells the epic story of Milo, a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant who has been unwillingly betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts in a torrent of blazing lava, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him.

It’s not quite 300 and it’s certainly not anything you’d find in the Marvel universe, but something about this trailer screams “history is like a comic book, we swear!” That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a curious change from the marketing efforts of previous historical epics like Troy or Kingdom Of Heaven.
