Justin Vernon Unsure If He Will Return To Bon Iver

There’s no good way to say a headline that involves a statement full of doubt. In an interview with Triple J (as sourced by NME), Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon suggested he was nowhere near the headspace needed to write another Bon Iver record, and was unsure if he ever would be. The full quote is as follows:

I don’t really write songs anymore. The last Bon Iver record was a very ‘sitting down with a guitar and writing’ kind of record. I really have to be in a specific headspace to even begin to illuminate an idea that would create another Bon Iver record, and I’m just not there… I’m really honoured [sic – but in fairness, the publication is based in the UK] that Bon Iver gives me a platform to do whatever I want, but there’s only so much time you can spend digging through yourself before you become insular. I’m not in a hurry to go back to that temperature. All of the music I’ve been making shifting away from Bon Iver feels really good… so if I ever do go back to Bon Iver it will be all the better for it.

The part to be frightened about is when he says “if I ever do go back to Bon Iver,” which implies he may not. Most of me wants to remain calm and suggest it’s just a phase, but that’s also what I thought when the White Stripes first entered their hiatus and ah… yep. Maybe we can worry a little bit. Hopefully, Volcano Choir lives up to the high standard Vernon has set for his creative output; until then, I’ll be frightened this Bon Iver hiatus never ends.
