STAND UP TUESDAYS: Joe DeRosa

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Joe DeRosa’s comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

Comedian Joe DeRosa returns to Stand Up Tuesdays with his third full-length CD, “You Will Die”, offering fans his views on living in New York City, global politics, man-tits and more. The first double album from DeRosa also features a true one-of-a-kind attempted recording of the album, which failed miserably due to a very drunken audience.

There’s no sugar-coating anything in “You Will Die” (as the name would indicate). DeRosa doesn’t shy away from letting his feelings known: he could not care less about world news, he hates his fellow Italian-Americans, and he’s ready to quit Twitter for good. But it’s not all bad news – in an absolutely brilliant monologue about vices, DeRosa encourages his fans to embrace the things that make them happy. In fact, DeRosa is the second SUT-featured comic in as many months to whole-heartedly endorse the use of cocaine (along with Greg Fitzsimmons). Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, after all, as DeRosa tells us, you’re just going to die anyway.

The culmination of “You Will Die” comes in the form of DeRosa’s characterizations – in particular, his impression of what happens to someone who chases their dream to New York:

“He burned my dream! Why did he do that? What am I gonna do? I wanted to pay my bills with my dream but I can’t! I gotta get a job because I can’t pay my bills with my dream, but I can’t get a job because you need a six page resume to work at Cozy! That makes a lot of sense. That’s fine. I’m going to have to move too because I live with four other people yet my rent is still $20,000 a month.”

There aren’t many comics who are able to pull off the negativity that DeRosa is able to dole out. DeRosa isn’t simply resigned to negativity – he’s super passionate about it, too, which ultimately leaves you revved up as the comedian preaches his harsh brand of frustrated truth.

DeRosa can currently be seen on History Channel’s “I Love the 1880’s”, and has appeared on HBO’s “Bored To Death”, FX’s” Louie”, IFC’s “Z-Rock”, E’s “Chelsea Lately”, and DirecTV’s “The Artie Lange Show”. He is a regular on Sirius XM’s The Opie and Anthony Show and Fox News’ “Redeye with Greg Gutfeld”. He headlines comedy clubs and colleges across the country and has been featured at South By Southwest, The Montreal Comedy Festival, The Moontower Comedy Festival, The New York Comedy Festival, Bonnaroo, and The Great American Comedy Festival.
