Discover One Direction’s “Diana” Before It Conquers The Airwaves

The release of One Direction’s new album, Midnight Memories, is finally upon us. We know some of our readers are still on the fence about whether or not they should risk whatever ‘cred’ they believe themselves to have by listening to a boy band, but we could not resist sharing our favorite track off the new album.

Following the opening one-two punch of “Best Song Ever” and current hit “Story Of My Life,” “Diana” offers listeners the first of many rock-tinged pop gems found on Midnight Memories. The verses tell of the boys turned men of One Direction trying to win over a girl against catchy guitar-and-drum production that brings to mind the height of 80s pop rock (with a modern twist, of course). Once the chorus hits, all hope for escaping the song without dancing, or at the very least tapping your foot in time with the music, is lost. The harmony and melody creeps into your subconscious and lodges themselves in the same realm Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” once resided. You can stream the song at the end of this post.

There is no telling when or if “Diana” will be given the official single treatment from One Direction, but considering the praise it has received in reviews and online it would be foolish if such efforts were not made in the months ahead. Personally, I think the song feels like a summer single, but it’s so infectious it will surely top the charts whenever its promoted to the public. Comment below and let us know your thoughts on “Diana.”

Why doesn’t no one realize this??? Wherever I’ve went, the media makes Diana to be a song that the boys are singing to, “win a girl over”. If you actually listen to the lyrics, it has NOTHING to do with winning a girl over. This song, the boys have dedicated to their suicidal or depressed/self harming fans. I mean, Liam’s part, “How could someone not miss you at all?” is a dead give-away. “Let me be the one to light a fire inside your eyes, you’ve been lonely, you don’t even know me, but I can feel you crying. Diana, let me be the one to, lift your heart up AND SAVE YOUR LIFE, I don’t think you even realize, baby you’d be saving mine.” This has nothing-nothing! to do with trying to capture one girls attention. The, “you don’t even know me” part CONFIRMS the boys don’t even personally know the person, but they still feel them hurting. And Harry’s part; “This can’t be over now. If I could hold ya, swear I’d never put you down!” Basically, he’s telling the fan to not give up, and saying that if he was actually there with the fan, he would hold her/him. Believe me, bands can save lives. Any band has the power to save a life. I just really felt I needed to bring this to people’s attention. Sorry if the explanation seems complicated.

This is interesting. See, I take the opening line about seeing her on the cover of a magazine as a way to express interest in a girl they’d never seen before. As they read the story they learn she’s a sad girl whose been in awful relationships that more than likely turned her off to the idea of love. Learning this, the boys of 1D realize anyone trying to get close to this girl would have to overcome obstacles placed in their way from previous relationships gone awry.

No, that opening line is still about Directioners. It’s talking about us on the poster for This Is Us (their movie), that was the giveaway to me.

I totally agree with you, I think this is the best comment I have ever heard so far, I mean it makes no sense (not your comment, what they said).

  5. GillySwag says:

The song is dedicated to Princess Diana, but to us (Us meaning us suicidal, depressed fans)

For me they help me in a sense, because it strikes me and I just break down, I am happy with this song, I am happy to know they appreciate people like me.

I am mad that I didn’t see that before, because now it makes sense to me.
