Charli XCX Returns With Another, Feistier Cover In “Allergic To Love”

Charli XCX has been staying in internet headlines with a steady stream of unconventional covers. First she made our ’90s hearts ache with a rousing rendition of “I Want Candy” and a chilly, sensual cover of “I Want It That Way.” Now she’s taken the next logical step: tackling a one-minute rager from an obscure Swedish punk band.

Snuffed by the Yakuza have six releases available for streaming on Spotify dated between 2003 and 2006. A bio for the band is difficult to come by. The first Google result is a MySpace; recent Facebook updates show only old photos and an announcement that a reunion has been postponed. Perhaps this will reignite those plans.

Regardless, Charli happened to know them, and she took to the track off their 2004 release Yazuka Slide with irreverent glee. The cover is raucous, loud, and totally punk, a good step away from what you’d expect of the British pop star. While we wait for the album that “SuperLove” served as an early herald for, this is a more than serviceable treat.
