Joie de Vivre and Prawn might hail from vastly different parts of the country, but you would be hard pressed to find two better bands to represent the emo genre on a split EP. The five new songs on the team effort, out tomorrow via Topshelf Records and Count Your Lucky Stars Records, pull from a wide range of musical and emotional influences, and they are some of the best you’ll hear this year. In typical Joie de Vivre form, the Rockford, Illinois group’s three tracks are pure 90s emo worship, complete with bright, melodic guitar parts, Brandon Lutmer’s soul-baring lyrics, and the occasional trumpet. “Martin Park” picks up right where their 2011 LP, We’re All Better Than This, left off, and “Good Morning, Mr. Franklin” will leave you impatient to hear what they do next.
Prawn bring some of their signature post-rock influence to their side of the split. Their songs are longer than Joie’s, allowing for intense buildups and melodic development, but they are no less emotionally charged. They will be doing a fair amount of touring over the next couple months, so if you want to hear these songs live, check out the dates after the break.
