There is an idea circling the net that nothing is safe from the world of Hollywood adaptations, and this Christmas the beloved fictional bear known as Paddington will prove that theory true.
Today, The Weinstein Company released the first trailer for Paddington, the first big screen adaptation of Michael Bond’s popular character. The film tells the story of the misadventures of a young Peruvian bear (voiced by Colin Firth) who travels to the big city in search of a place to call home. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined. That is, until he meets the Brown family and they offer him a temporary safe haven.
The clip released today introduces Paddington for the first time without giving away any story whatsoever. Viewers watch as the Brown family attempt to sort out the presence of the bear with their insurance company while young Paddington explores the family’s bathroom. As you can probably guess, hilarity soon ensues. You can view the trailer below:
Harry Potter producer David Heyman has spearheaded this production from day one, and even though this is a decidedly more family friendly film than stories of teen wizards there is still something about the style in which this footage is presented that feels touched by the same magic Potter possessed. Whether or not that remains true for the feature length effort is anyone’s guess, but for now I am interested in seeing what kinds of trouble Paddington will get himself into when the film opens on Christmas Day 2014.
