The Morning Benders Change Name to Pop Etc

Leading fans to believe they had broken up, San Francisco natives The Morning Benders took to their Twitter last night with a vague tweet stating, “This will be the last tweet from The Morning Benders. Thank you all very much.”

In fact, they weren’t lying, as any further tweets from the band will be from the moniker Pop Etc. The band decided to change their name since they’ve learned that the word “bender” can be used as a derogatory term aimed at homosexuals. The band says, “We simply cannot go on using a name that is demeaning to the gay community. The reason we are making music is to reach and unite as many different kinds of people as possible, and the idea that our name may be hateful towards anyone makes us sick.”

You can read a full statement from the band regarding the name change at their website.

This notion had never personally crossed my mind any time I’ve thought of or listened to The Morning Benders. I love this band and will continue listening to their music as I’m sure a name change won’t affect their talents and further releases. How do you feel about this decision they’ve made. Noble or unnecessary?
