FACEPALM: Paramount Begins Planning ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2’

Never underestimate a major motion picture studio’s love for cashing in on even the smallest good news and beating it until it’s deader than Seabiscuit.

Having just barely crossed the $200 million mark at the the international box office, Paramount Pictures has announced it is moving forward with plans to create a sequel to Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. The movie, directed by Tommy Wirkola, cost around $50m to make, which is seemingly the only reasoning that Paramount needs to move forward.

It is unclear at this time whether or not stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton will sign on, but we fear what will happen if they decide to pass. I mean, Paramount wouldn’t just replace them and keep chugging ahead, right?

Let’s forget for a second about the bad reviews and weak $55m take domestically to ask the real question: What the hell would you have these characters do? The first film (spoilers ahead) tells the tale of H&G figuring out who they are and where they came from, but in no way sets up, or even leaves you wanting, a sequel. Hell, I was losing interest before the credits even rolled.

We’ll post more details as they begin to surface. Until then, comment below and let us know if you would take another journey with Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

I thought it was a decent enough Big Dumb Action Film, but I’m aware I’m in a minority there. I can’t see them getting Renner for a second one. He’s got other things to be going on with.
