First ‘Blue Jasmine’ Trailer Puts Cate Blanchett’s Breakdown Front And Center

Woody Allen has been releasing a film a year for longer than many of our readers have been alive. More often than not these films go on to be amongst the best films of the year, and today we get our first look at his latest potential masterpiece.

Blue Jasmine stars Cate Blanchett as “a New York housewife struggling through a life crisis.” That may seem like a rather dull premise, but the first trailer for the film promises something much greater. The story follows Blanchett through some sort of economic downfall, most likely resulting from the actions of her husband (played by Alec Baldwin). Her life is forced to change, and if I had to guess the “lesson” of the film will be taught through that journey to her new life. You can view the trailer at the end of this post.

After two films that relied heavily on trying to change the past or alter the present, it’s refreshing to see Allen switching his focus to dealing with problems you’re unable to escape. If all goes well, Blanchett could see her name tossed around a lot once awards season warms up in the later half of the fall.

Blue Jasmine opens in theater July 26.
