Netflix To Launch First Original Series From Dreamworks Animation

A few months back we reported that Netflix had partnered with Dreamworks Animation to develop a slew of original series for the streaming service that would be geared towards children and make good use of Dreamworks’ extensive catalog of beloved original characters. At the time no additional information about which programs could be expected were made known, but this morning Variety broke news about which animated hero would be the first to introduce Dreamworks’ original programming to Netflix.

Launching Christmas Eve of this year, Turbo Fast will follow the characters from DWA’s summer 2013 release Turbo in all new adventures. The film did not perform well at the box office, but execs have faith the characters will play well on the streaming service. The first five episodes will be available worldwide on Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 12:01 a.m. Pacific, with additional new episodes premiering throughout 2014.

At this point it’s unclear whether or not Ryan Reynolds and the cast members from the film version of Turbo will be returning for the series, but we expect those details will be made public in the days ahead. You can view a trailer for the series below.

Dreamworks is expected to announce additional programming in the near future. Their agreement with Netflix greenlit 300 hours of programming, so if Turbo Fast is not for you I’m sure something more akin to your animated preferences will find its way into production in the months ahead. Stay tuned!
