Austin, Texas indie rock group Okkervil River have released the the third volume in their Golden Opportunities EP series. Like the previous two EPs, Golden Opportunities 3 is, in the words of frontman Will Sheff, an “autobiographical covers record,” and the focus of this chapter is Sheff’s childhood in the 1980s, the decade from which these five songs originate.
Recorded at soundchecks and radio appearances around the country, the tracks range in quality, but each one, from the rousing rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Money Changes Everything” to the sparse, organic “The End of the Innocence” (originally by Don Henley), offers a unique take on the synthesized pop of eighties. Stream and download Golden Opportunities 3 at Okkervil River’s website, and grab the first two volumes while you’re at it.
